Anchor Link

clutch

Anchor Link

WHY DOESN’T CLUTCH HAVE ANCHOR LINK CONNECTORS AT BOTH ENDS?

All Peak Design straps use Anchor Link connectors – it makes them strong, quick-connecting, and quickly interchangeable. Clutch is the only strap we currently make that uses a different kind of connection system at one end. Instead of an Anchor Link it has a special tension clip that hooks into a loop of super-tough Hypalon.

The original design of Clutch actually called for using an Anchor Link connection at the top of the strap. In fact, we were about to call the design final and proceed, but at the last minute we scrapped that portion of the design entirely. It was a very disruptive decision to our development cycle, but a good one we think. Here’s why we did it.

Connecting with an Anchor Link at the top only seems natural. But there were a few drawbacks:

  1. The Anchor Link connection takes up almost 3 inches. The problem is, these top 3 inches of Clutch are the most important part of the pad with respect to enabling a confortable grip. Having an Anchor there would have meant a free floating pad underneath the Anchor cord, followed by a rigid Link connector. We actually found it to be a bit painful, as the location of that Link connector would have been directly atop your knuckles. It was simply uncomfortable.
  2. We needed the pad close to the camera, and we needed to control it’s orientation on the user’s hand.  By having a wide section of Hypalon (wide compared to an Anchor cord) loop through your camera strap lug, we can dictate the direction the pad takes as it extends away from your camera. This is helpful in creating a hand strap that doesn’t migrate.

It would have been great to have Anchor Link connections both at top and bottom, but it wasn’t the best system, and the best system is what we needed.
